7 REASONS WHY MANY MARRIAGES FAIL TODAY
This article presents seven reasons why many marriages fail today, supported by relevant Bible verses. These reasons highlight the importance of a solid foundation in God's Word, selflessness, effective communication, forgiveness, intimacy, financial stewardship, and guarding against external influences.
1. Lack of Foundation in God's Word: Many marriages fail because
they lack a solid foundation in God's Word. Without a biblical framework to
guide and sustain the marriage, it becomes susceptible to challenges and
temptations.
"Therefore
everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a
wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it
had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:24-25
2. Selfishness and Pride: When selfishness and pride
dominate a marriage, couples prioritize their own needs and desires over their
partner's, leading to conflicts and discord.
"Do
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value
others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to
the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4
3. Lack of Communication: Failure to communicate
effectively often leads to misunderstandings and unresolved issues that can
erode the marriage over time.
Ephesians 4:29 - "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only
what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit
those who listen."
4. Unforgiveness and Bitterness: When couples hold onto
grudges and refuse to forgive, it creates a toxic environment that hinders
reconciliation and healing.
"Bear
with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against
someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13
5. Lack of Intimacy and Connection: Emotional and physical intimacy
is essential for a thriving marriage. Neglecting this aspect can lead to
feelings of loneliness and disconnection.
1 Corinthians 7:3-5 - "The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and
likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own
body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have
authority over his own body but yields it to his wife."
6. Financial Struggles: Financial stress can strain
a marriage and cause tension between partners, especially when there is a lack
of financial stewardship and communication.
"The
rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." Proverbs 22:7
7. External Influences and Temptations: The influence of outside
factors, such as negative peer pressure or worldly values, can negatively
impact a marriage if not guarded against.
1 Corinthians 15:33 - "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good
character.'"
